Chapter 1 - Types of Sentences in the English Language with Examples -


A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense. Sentences are primarily classified into 4 types -

  1. Declarative or Assertive Sentences - Normal sentences which assert a simple statement. Example - John goes to the market. 
  2. Interrogative Sentences - Sentences that ask a question. Example - Where does John go?
  3. Exclamatory Sentences - Sentences that express a feeling and exclamation. They usually have an exclamatory word followed by an exclamation mark. Example - Alas! John is dead.
  4. Imperative Sentences - Sentences that express command, request, or entreaties. Example- Have mercy upon us.
